The National FFA Organization is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of young people by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
The FFA Motto
The FFA motto gives members twelve short words to live by as they experience the opportunities in the organization. Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.
To accomplish this mission, FFA:
- Develops competent and assertive agricultural leadership.
- Increases awareness of the global and technological importance of agriculture and its contribution to our well-being.

The National Council for Agricultural Education
The National Council for Agricultural Education provides leadership, coordination and support for the continuous improvement and diversity of agricultural education.
The FFA was organized nationally in 1928 in Kansas City, Mo. In 1950, Congress granted the FFA a federal charter, making it an integral, intra-curricular part of public agricultural instruction under the National Vocational Education Acts.
Structure of FFA
The FFA operates on local, state and national levels. Student members belong to chapters organized at the local school level. Agricultural education instructors serve as chapter advisors. Chapters are organized under state associations headed by an advisor and executive secretary, often employees of the state department of education. States conduct programs and host annual conventions.
The National FFA Organization, governed by a Board of Directors and a Board of Student Officers, charters state associations; provides direction, programmatic materials and support; and hosts the National FFA Convention, which draws more than 65,000 attendees each October. The National FFA Alumni & Supporters Association's more than 600,000 members in 2,481 alumni and supporter chapters and countless volunteers assist in the continued growth and development of active FFA programs.
The agricultural education program provides a well-rounded, practical approach to learning through three components: Classroom education in agricultural topics such as plant and animal sciences, horticulture, forestry, agrimarketing, etc.; hands-on supervised agricultural career experience such as starting a business or working for an established company; and FFA, which provides leadership opportunities and tests students' agricultural skills.
Programs and Activities
The FFA local, state and national programs and activities help members develop public speaking skills, conduct and participate in meetings, manage financial matters, strengthen problem-solving abilities and assume civic responsibility. Degrees earned at local, state and national levels recognize members' increasing accomplishments. Competitive events and awards programs in areas such as public speaking, commodity marketing and agriscience recognize students' achievements, encourage them to excel beyond the classroom and develop career skills. Community service programs help students contribute to society.
The Pledge to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Response: "To practice brotherhood, honor agricultural opportunities and responsibilities, and develop those qualities of leadership, which a FFA member should possess."
Code of Ethics
We will conduct ourselves at all times in order to be a credit to our organization, chapter, school and community by:
Dressing neatly and appropriately for the occasion.
Showing respect for the rights of others and being courteous at all times.
Being honest and not taking unfair advantage of others.
Respecting the property of others.
Refraining from loud, boisterous talk, swearing and other unbecoming conduct.
Demonstrating sportsmanship in the show ring, judging contests and meetings.
Being modest in winning and generous in defeat.
Attending meetings promptly and respecting the opinion of others in discussion.
Taking pride in our organization, activities, supervised experience program, exhibits, and the occupation of agriculture.

As the blue field of our nation's flag and the golden fields of ripened corn unify our country, the FFA colors of national blue and corn gold give unity to the organization. All FFA functions and paraphernalia should proudly display the colors.
The cross section of the ear of corn provides the foundation of the emblem, just as corn has historically served as the foundation crop of American agriculture. It is also a symbol of unity, as corn is grown in every state of the nation. The rising sun signifies progress and holds a promise that tomorrow will bring a new day glowing with opportunity. The plow signifies labor and tillage of the soil, the backbone of agriculture and the historic foundation of our country’s strength. The eagle is a national symbol which serves as a reminder of our freedom and ability to explore new horizons for the future of agriculture. The owl, long recognized for its wisdom, symbolizes the knowledge required to be successful in the industry of agriculture. The words "Agricultural Education" and "FFA" are emblazoned in the center to signify the combination of learning and leadership necessary for progressive agriculture.
