The Greenville City School’s Board of Education held their 2014 Organizational Meeting and regular January meeting at the St. Clair Memorial Hall on Thursday evening January 9, 2014.
During the Organizational Meeting the Board of Education elected Mr. James Sommer to serve as President and Mr. Fred Matix was elected Vice President for the 2014 school year. The second Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Anna Bier Civic Room at St. Clair Memorial Hall was established as the regular Board of Education meeting night for 2014.
The Board appointed James Sommer as the legislative and student achievement liaison. Superintendent, Douglas Fries was authorized to be the district purchasing agent and Treasurer, Carla Surber was approved as the board designee to attend public record training. All other items on the organizational meeting agenda were approved as presented.
The regular Board of Education meeting for January followed the organizational meeting. Board President, Mr. James Sommer, called the meeting to order. After adoption of the
agenda, the board approved the minutes from the December 12th, 2013 regular meeting and December 27th, 2013 special meeting.

Board of Education Members for their willing leadership and service to Greenville City Schools. January is School Board Recognition Month and we are honoring Mr. David Ernst, Mr. Brad Gettinger, Mr. David Madden, Mr. Fred Matix, and Mr. James Sommer,
for their commitment to our school district.
Superintendent, Douglas Fries extended the following commendations:
Brian McKibben, J.R. Price, Scottie Moore, Mrs. Kathy Douds, and the Greenville
Junior High and Senior Band and Orchestra students on an excellent holiday
concert on December 17, 2013.
John Guttadore and the FFA students for their contribution of 53 shoeboxes and gifts for
Operation Christmas Child.
2013-2014 Spelling Bee building winners of Greenville Junior High School-Landin
Brown, Mariah Nicholas, and Layla Carrington; South Middle School-Caleb
Coppess, Ashley Strosnider and Amanda Chui; East Intermediate School-Jake
Barr, Hunter Class and Mallorie Anthony.
Greenville Senior High School Athletic Hall of Fame recent inductees of Jim Eby,
Linda Carothers-Collins and Brittney Runner.
Treasurer, Carla Surber presented the following items receiving the board of education approval:
Approved the Treasurer’s report for the month of December 2013.
Approved the Schedule of Bills for the month of December 2013.
Approved bills for payment under the then and now certification.
Approved appropriations for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014.
Approved authorization of transfers and advances.
Approved a resolution designating bonds as qualified tax exempt obligations for the additional 9,725,004.80 principal amount which was the remaining amount from voter approval authorized to be pursuant to board action September 12, 2013.

Accepted the following donations with appreciation:
$50.00 from GCS for the benefit of Greenville Senior High School’s FCCLA program for
preparing the board member reception following the December meeting.
$200.00 from Goodwill/Easter Seals of Miami Valley for the benefit of Greenville Senior
High Schools’ Student Council.
$2,800.00 from the Harry D. Stephens Memorial, Inc. for the benefit of Greenville
School’s Muse Machine program.
$75.00 from Scott M & A Corporation (The Scott Family McDonalds) for the benefit
of East Intermediate School’s “McTeacher’s Night”.
$1,065.00 from Box Tops for Education for the benefit of East Intermediate School.
Approved the following contracts, purchases and resolutions:
A support contract on the BIM Live Scan in the amount of $780.00 from March 1,
2014 to February 28, 2015.
A personal appearance contract with Relevant Booking, LLC in the amount of
$600.00 for 2 performances by Joel Penton on March 18, 2014 for South Middle
and Greenville Senior High School students, to be paid from principal accounts.
A contract with the Darke County YMCA for use of their facility to conduct
Greenville Senior High School Gymnastic Meet on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at a
cost of $500.00 to be paid by the athletic department.
Membership renewal with the Ohio School Boards Association for the year 2014 at a cost of
$6,098.00.
Approved the following curriculum items:
Approved for the Adult Workforce-STNA classes at a cost of $575.00 per student.
Payment to certified staff to be paid for Crisis Prevention Intervention Training/Professional Development work to be paid at the stipend rate of $17.53 per hour as defined by Article XIV of the Master Agreement, to be worked at the discretion of the Superintendent and pending the completion of all necessary requirements. (4 to 8 hours training, not to exceed 20 certified staff)
Payment to classified staff at the para- professional rate of pay for Crisis Prevention
Intervention Training/Professional Development work to be conducted by June 30,
2014, at the discretion of the Superintendent and pending the completion of all
necessary requirements. (4 to 8 hours training, not to exceed 10 para-
professionals).
Jeanne Buckley is a board approved volunteer for the Greenville Virtual Academy
pending completion of all necessary requirements and successful background
checks.
Superintendent, Mr. Fries presented the following personnel items receiving the board of education approval:
District food service workers and custodians who perform services for the 2014 Solo & Ensemble Contest contracted event to be paid their current contracted hourly rate
of pay. Workers will be assigned as needed by appropriate administration.
All substitute wages that are less than the Ohio State Minimum of $7.95 per hour, which changed January 1, 2014, is corrected to reflect the mandated increase.
A per diem contract based on Column II, Step 0, for Nancy Hill effective December 20, 2013, since she has served 60 consecutive days as a substitute teacher in the same
position (for Gwen Warvel). Further recommend this contract automatically expire at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.
The following individual to be hired in the positions listed for the Adult Basic
& Literacy Education pending completion of all necessary requirements, including certification/licensure and successful background checks from July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014 under the provisions of the AB-S1-2014 grant:

Approved Lorie Simpson to be hired for the Workforce Development Program January 2, 2014 through June 30, 2014 at a rate of $50.00 an hour.
A 2-year administrative contract for Megan Borton as a school psychologist for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years at a salary of $63,000.00 per year, 215 day contract
year.
Supplemental Contracts
Approved Lori Keller to perform services for the Greenville Athletic Department during the Winter, and Spring seasons, beginning with the 2013‐2014 school year, at no expense to the general funds. Duties performed: ticket seller, ticket taker, timer, concession worker, scorekeeper, cleanup crew, announcer, maintenance workerand video operator.
Approved professional development for Toni Shellabarger, David Peltz and Laura Bemus.
During the meeting the Board of Education approved a group of policies as presented
from the Ohio School Board Association.
Mr. Fries thanked the Board of Education for their support of the school district, students, staff and community during the meeting. January is School Board Recognition Month. All
school board members across the state should be thanked for their dedication and service to Ohio Schools.
The February regular Board of Education meeting will be held on Thursday, February 13th
at 7:00 p.m. in the Anna Bier Civic Room of St. Clair Memorial Hall.
