Solar Eclipse Calamity Day - April 8, 2024

Dear Parents/Guardians, Students, and Staff,

After communication with several authorities about the upcoming Solar Eclipse Day, on April 8, 2024, and out of an abundance of caution, Greenville City Schools will be taking that day as a calamity day.  Our first five calamity days in any year are not made up.  Our next three calamity days, if needed (day 6, 7, & 8), are completed online through E-Days.  If we have more than eight calamity days, they are made up by our scheduled make-up days on the 2023-2024 school calendar.

We are notifying students, parents/guardians, and staff that Monday, April 8, 2024, will be a calamity day.  Greenville City Schools will not be in session at school.  There will also be no extracurricular activities that day including practices, games, or any other type of activities.

Parents/guardians can begin now making other arrangements for their children that day, April 8, 2024.  The district felt that notifying you early would allow for better planning for your family circumstances.

Again, if April 8th happens to be calamity day six through eight this year the district will operate on an E-Day.

The district is encouraging everyone to study and learn about this upcoming, once in a lifetime, solar eclipse scenario.  Please also keep yourself safe through the day on April 8, 2024.   Also, consider proper eye protection if anyone is outside during the eclipse.

For planning purposes, the following days are non-instructional days for students this year:

Winter Break:                          December 20, 2023 – January 2, 2024
Martin Luther King Day:         January 15, 2024
Staff Workday:                       January 16, 2024
Staff Waiver Day:                   January 29, 2024
Presidents’ Day:                     February 19, 2024
Spring Break:                         March 29, 2024- April 1, 2024
Memorial Day:                        May 27, 2024

Happy Holidays to all our students, parents/guardians, and staff.

Sincerely,

Douglas W. Fries
Superintendent
