4-16-2015 BOE Communication

The Greenville City School’s Board of Education held their regular April meeting at the St. Clair Memorial Hall on Thursday evening April 16, 2015. A work session was conducted to discuss the status of the construction projects at both the high school and new K-8 site. There was also a presentation by the Friends of Harmon Field.

Superintendent, Douglas Fries extended the following highlights:
• Cory Campbell for earning the Board of Education Art Award. The school district and community will enjoy your talent for years to come as it will be displayed in the Anna Bier Civic Room.
• Francesca Masso-Rivette and Quintin Muhlenkamp for earning Superior Ratings at the District Science Day on March 21, 2015. They will proceed to the State Science Day held at the Ohio State University on May 16, 2015.

Superintendent, Douglas Fries extended the following commendations:
• Macy Godown and Zachary Baughman for earning an Excellent Rating during the District Science Day on March 21, 2015. We also commend Francesca Masso-Rivetti and Quintin Muhlenkamp for earning special awards during the District Science Day.
• Julie Brewer, Art Teacher at South Middle School for being recognized by the Ohio Art Education Association for high quality student art work submitted to the 2015 Jerry Tollifson Art Criticism Open.
• Kate Rehmert and Hunter Class, both 5th grade students at South Middle School for earning 1st Place and Honorable Mention respectively during the essay contest at the 2015 Jerry Tollifson Art Criticism Open.
• Melanie Huffman, Nicole Hawk, Tiffany Labig and the many other staff members of the District for the coordination and preparation for the annual Art Exhibit during the Waves of Pride that our entire community enjoys and looks forward to yearly. Special thank you to Tiffany Labig for coordinating the event.
• High School Theatre Students and their Advisors, Thomas Nader and Cheryl Collins for their production of “The Three Musketeers” during April 3-4, 2015.
• Toni Shellabarger and the NTHS Officers for conducting the Fourteenth Annual National Technical Honor Society Induction Ceremony on April 10, 2015. Further commend the newly inducted students of NTHS: Seniors: Korey Garland, Kelsey McClure, Steven Mittermann, Amber Mead, Macayla Mendoza, Gunnar Fustos, Reece Hunt, Benjamin Westfall, Courtney Welch, Madisyn Pieper, Sydney Alcarez, and Brianna Beisner. Juniors: Jondalar Apple, Caitlin Beasecker, Allison Minnich, Mallory Rich, Austin Alexander, Randy Blakeley, Nicholas Buckingham, William Massie, Eric Pence, Caleb Poston, Andrew Bowers, Hannah Coakley, Dylan Gilbert, Jacob Hounshell, Lukas Lowry, Quintin Muhlenkamp, Carmen Navas Davis, Alexander Onkst, Joseph Suter, Brayden York, Sara Gibboney, Haley Baker, Tyler Davis, Emily Fulton, Lucie Garber, Madison Garland, Bhavneep Kaur, Ashton Kester, Tori Knoop, Breann Menger, Casey Mortensen, Jazzlyn Petry, Sara Wenning, Terin Ellis, Clayton Guillozet, Yuta Nakamura, Nicole Sherry, and Chelsea Stout.

Treasurer, Carla Surber presented the following items receiving the Board of Education approval:
• Approved the Treasurer’s report for the month of March 2015.
• Approved the Schedule of Bills for the month of March 2015.
• Approved bills for payment under the then and now certification.
• Approved appropriations for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015.
• Approved authorization of transfers and advances.
• Approved a petty cash fund in the amount of $175.00 for the National BPA Trip on May 5-10, 2015.
• Approved of fund 498 Capital Improvements CAP. The purpose of this fund to assist school districts with capital projects and it is classified as a governmental fund type, Capital Projects Fund. It will be used to manage the grant monies from the OFCC for the Memorial Hall Cultural Renovation Project, cost center 9415 and the Workforce Development Project, cost center 9310.
• Accepted $5,043.00 previously held by the Greenville Enrichment Association to be used for the purpose of Talented and Gifted Children within the school district. This money is being transferred by an organization where Nan Hottle acted as Treasurer and it is her desire to assure that it’s use continues to meet the criteria originally proposed.

Approved the following resolution:
WHEREAS, today’s staff members mold our future citizens through their guidance and education, and
WHEREAS, today’s staff members encounter students of widely differing backgrounds and abilities, and
WHEREAS, our society expects public education to provide quality education services to all children, no matter what their backgrounds or abilities, and
WHEREAS, our country’s future depends, in large measure, upon the education our youth receive today, and
WHEREAS, staff members spend endless hours outside their classrooms preparing engaging lessons, evaluating progress, counseling and coaching students, performing community service, and supporting the instructional goals of the district, and
WHEREAS, our community recognizes that its staff members are providing quality educational services to our children.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT the Greenville City School District Board of Education designates the week of May 4-8, 2015, as Staff Member Appreciation Week in this community, and
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED THAT the Board of Education calls on the community to join with it in personally expressing appreciation to our staff members for a “job well done.”

Accepted the following donations with appreciation:
• $50.00 from Fort GreeneVille Chapter of DAR for the benefit of the Greenville Senior High School’s NJROTC program.
• The following donations were accepted to benefit the Vocal Music Department: First Assembly of God-$631.00, Mary Bevins-$100.00, Rick & Kathy Beam-$50.00, and Elizabeth & Franklin Hesson-$10.00.
• $586.77 from First United Methodist Church for the benefit of Woodland Primary School to be applied to student fees.
• $2,141.10 from LifeTouch for the benefit of Woodland Primary School.
• $931.83 from LifeTouch for the benefit of South Middle School.
• $20.00 from John & Alice Keller for the benefit of Greenville Senior High School’s Class of 2018.
• $410.00 from Ernst Sporting Goods for the benefit of the Athletic Department.
• The following donations for the benefit of the Greenville Senior High School’s Supply Chain Management for a Night in Hollywood: Kiwanis Club of Greenville-$300.00, Bradley & Laura Bemus-$50.00, Edward & Gloria Ault-$25.00, Greenville Memorial Auxiliary-$100.00, Second National Bank-$500.00, Midmark Corporation-$200.00, and Douglas & Tina Fries-$200.00.
• $200.00 from Mike & Sherri Jones for the benefit of Greenville Senior High School’s FCCLA program.

Superintendent, Mr. Fries presented the following contracts receiving the Board of Education approval:
• Change order 009 be approved for the high school renovation project with the contractor, Brumbaugh Construction, Inc., in the amount of $25,815.00 will be paid with established construction contingency funds..
• Education Management Systems for the MealsPlus annual support effective April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2016, for Point of Sale and Free/Reduced meals for a total cost of $2,095.00 to be paid with food service funds.
• Wilson Occupational Health Services to provide T8 physicals for the bus/van drivers at a cost of $50.00 per driver for the 2015-2016 school year.
• Approved Proposal Request #36 for HVAC modifications for the CT Building to be paid out of building contingency or PI funds at a cost of $77,163.00.


Superintendent, Mr. Fries presented the following curriculum items receiving the Board of Education approval:
• Recommended by Ken Neff, Principal, students were approved, pending the completion of necessary requirements, as the graduating Class of 2015 for Greenville Senior High School.
• Recommended by Ken Neff, Principal, students were approved to receive Certificate of Attendance as the Class of 2015 for Greenville Senior High School.
• Quality Program Standards for Greenville Career Tech Center as designed by the Ohio Department of Education were approved.
• The customer fee schedule for Greenville Senior High School’s Auto Technology program was approved for the 2015-2016 school year.

Superintendent, Mr. Fries presented the following personnel items receiving the Board of Education approval:
• Resignation for retirement purposes of Mary Petry, Intervention Specialist at Greenville Middle School was accepted effective June 1, 2015. Thank you, Mrs. Petry, for your years of dedication and service to the District and students.
• Resignation for retirement purposes of Rebecca Muhlenkamp, Intervention Specialist at Greenville Junior High School was accepted effective June 30, 2015. Thank you, Mrs. Muhlenkamp, for your years of dedication and service to the District and students.
• Resignation of Raegan Inman, Fourth Grade Teacher, East Intermediate School was accepted effective at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.
• Resignation of Ken Neff, Principal, Greenville Senior High School was accepted effective at the end of the 2014-2015 contract year.
• Resignation of Cynthia Timmerman, 4th Grade Teacher, East Intermediate School was accepted effective at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.
• The following were hired as new staff members for the 2015-2016 school year: Chelsea Dowd-Social Studies Teacher-GHS; Morgan Robbins-Intervention Specialist-Woodland Primary; Leslie Wenrich-Intervention Specialist-Junior High; Tamara Smith-Intervention Specialist-South Middle; Jordan Renfro-Intervention Specialist-East Intermediate; Ken Neff-Virtual Academy Teacher-GHS; and Stephen Eldred-Assistant Director/Assistant Instructor of the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Program-GHS, pending completion of all necessary requirements, including certification/licensure and successful completion of criminal background checks.
• Catherine McNew and Jamie Cook were hired for substitute staff for the 2015-2016 school year, pending completion of all necessary requirements, including certification/licensure and successful completion of criminal background checks.
• Stacey Baker and Lori Snyder were hired as part-time summer building workers for the summer of 2015.
• Kami Berner, Chad Denman, Peggy Goodpaster, Laura Price, Ryan Ramsey, Meg Rehmert, Cole Ward and Jordan Ernst were hired as part-time summer employment for the paint, maintenance, cleaning and moving crew for the summer of 2015. Also hired were substitutes for the summer crew: Justin Brown, Alexander Davis, Brant Duncan, Derek Lockhart, Haleigh Luce, and Andrew New.
• Susan Ahrens was approved as a Home Instruction Teacher for an additional student during the 2014-2015 school year.
• Nancy Hill’s substitute rate of pay was increased 1.4 times the regular substitute teacher rate effective April 2, 2105 because she has completed 20 consecutive days in the same position.
• Lori Hoover was given a contract to manage the Channel 5 media production at a rate of $17.62 per hour during the 2014-2015 school year as directed by the Director of Business Services and Career Technology.
• Approved payment in the amount of $565.45 each for teachers who write and complete Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) for the 2014-2015 school year: (Part-time teachers will receive one-half of the total.)
• Approved the employment of Stephen Eldred as Assistant Director/Assistant Instructor of the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Program at Greenville Senior High School. Employment on a per diem basis at the rate of $239.53 limited to no more than 30 days to be worked prior to June 30, 2015, pending completion of all necessary requirements, including certification/licensure and successful completion of criminal background checks.
• Tuition reimbursement payment was approved for Lori Keller and Toni Shellabarger.
• Professional Development was approved for Toni Shellabarger, Carol Paul and Andrea Townsend.

The meeting was adjourned after an executive session. The May regular Board of Education meeting will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Anna Bier Civic Room of St. Clair Memorial Hall.
